Second-year St. Clair marketing students raised over $8,000 for local charities during the pandemic, while third-year students partnered with the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association to help local start-ups with their marketing plans.

With help from marketing professor Nicole Rourke, the second-year students held various online events through their Event Planning classes, with money from ticket sales going to charity. Events varied from online yoga classes, home-based scavenger hunts, and video game tournaments.

Rourke said students were given a class assignment to come up with an event that attracted at least 25 people and raised $250. A local charity had to be the recipient of the money raised.

One of the most successful events was an online concert that raised $1,005 for the Ronald McDonald House.

The third-year marketing students created and presented Marketing Plans for three newly opened businesses in Windsor: The Cookie Bar, Syd's Sandwiches and Roti Bowl N Soul. All three businesses opened during the pandemic and they have since found success, thanks to the students' help, providing marketing strategies for social media implementation and promotions.

It is important, now more than ever, to support local businesses in Windsor-Essex, Rourke said. With the ongoing pandemic, small businesses struggle and rely on the support of the community.
