(Windsor, Ontario) – On Wednesday January 17, 2018 the Downtown Mission celebrated the opening of the Cameron Robert Bell Fitness Centre. Located at their new Downtown Mission Wellness Centre on Ouellette Avenue, it is a centre furnished with health club-quality cardio and resistance exercise equipment to help guests train their bodies and direct their energies into more positive ways to deal with stress and anxiety.

The resources for the Centre were donated by Dr. Robert Bell and the facility is named in honour of his grandson Cameron, who was an accomplished combat sport athlete and strong believer in the benefits of physical fitness.

In addition to this generous donation, students from St. Clair College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program had the opportunity to contribute to this amazing Centre as well. In their 2017 winter semester they spent their field placement researching and developing the floor plan and activity guides for the fitness centre. The students met with guests who frequent the Mission and through that research they explored the needs of those living with poverty and homelessness.

The result is a wonderful space where guests can work out, guided by posters and an informational Guide to Wellness that the students developed and published. They also developed a guide to be used on how to effectively deliver programming in the centre.

“The opportunity for learning and the application of what has been taught in the classroom will enable our students to go forward in their careers and achieve great success as leaders in their profession,” says Deborah Ivey, Fitness and Health Promotion Program Coordinator. “We were all honoured to work with the Downtown Mission to help them see their dream come to fruition.”
