Students will be introduced to the microorganisms found in the environment, especially the characteristics and anatomy of the bacterial cell and its host/parasite relationships. To be included are the factors involved in virulence and infectious processes, sterilization and disinfection theory and principles, and the maintenance of equipment used for sterilization. This course provides the student with an introduction to how the body resists infection and disease, and the mechanisms used by the body in this defense. The laboratory sessions will introduce the student to basic immunological tests, the principles of antigen/antibody reactions, and the diagnostic of significance of the test results.
