This course will introduce the student to the study of mental health in the context of human development. Mental health challenges facing children, youth and families will be examined in detail with particular emphasis upon evidenced based practice, support and treatment approaches. Students will reflect upon the risk and protective factors for youth in terms of mental health within the Socio Ecological Model. The impact of attachment, trauma and loss, resilience, and self-regulation will be explored. A concise, yet thorough and comprehensive overview of mental health issues will be examined from both a psychological and Child and Youth Care Relational Practice perspective. Students will examine psychological content while reflecting upon specific Child and Youth Care theories models and interventions using language congruent to the CYC approach.
