The course focuses upon how young people are managed within the criminal justice system in Canada. There is an emphasis on the various defining legislation with respect to the youth justice system in Ontario including, but not limited to, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Children and Family Services Act, the Provincial Offences Act and the Education Act. Attention is paid to the philosophies behind the Youth Criminal Justice Act and adolescent development. This course examines the underpinnings of criminal behaviour, specifically exploring and understanding risks, needs, and responsivity issues in youth. This course explores the policies, procedures and case management responsibilities of those involved in the youth justice system. Special attention is placed on the philosophies of relationship custody as it pertains to the youth justice services in Ontario.
